The absence of sight. It may be due to lesion of the eye, the optic nerve, the optic tracts, the optic radiation, or the cortex of the occipital and temporo-sphenoidal lobes and angular gyrus. Mind-B.( Cortical b., Psychical b., visual apraxia), condition due to lesion of the cerebral cortex, in which without alteration in the eye or in the conducting tracts from the eye to the visual centre, the sight of familiar objects affords no idea of their nature. Word-b., a variety of mind-b., in which written or printed word-symbols, although seen, arc not appreciated as words: due to lesion of lower and posterior part of the left parietal lobe. Color-b., or B. for one or more colors, is called Blue-b., Red-b., Total color b., etc., according to the color that is not perceived. See Colorblindness. Night-b., inability to see by night; hemeralopia. Day-b., inability to see by day; nyctalopia. Snow-b., a violent conjunctivitis with transient b., due to dazzling by light reflected from snow.
