This gas, when breathed, proves fatal from containing no oxygen. When diluted with two-thirds of atmospheric air, it occasions some diminution of muscular power and sensibility, and a reduction of the force of the circulation. It has been respired in catarrh, haemoptysis, and phthisis.
-
An element often classed with the metals; atomic weight, 1; sp. gr., 0. 069( air being 1); symbol, H. It is an odorless, tasteless, combustible gas. It combines directly with many elements and radicles, forming the Hydrides. The most important of these are: ( 1) Hydrides of the halogens and other acid radicles( like cyanogen), forming the H. acids or Hydracids( acids which contain no oxygen, including hydrochloric, hydrobromic, hydriodic, hydrofluoric, ana hydrocyanic acids); ( 2) Hydrides of oxygen( oxides of h.), including H. monoxide or water, H20; H. peroxide, H. dioxide, H2O2, an unstable liquid which, owing to the readiness with which it gives up oxygen, is used as a bleaching agent and antiseptic in solution( Aqua hydrogenii dioxidi, U. S., Liquor hydrogenii peroxidi, B. P.); and the radical Hydroxyl, OH, the characteristic constituent of the Hydrates, including the Alcohols, Phenols, and Oxy-acids; ( 3) Hydrides of sulphur, including H. disulphide or Sulphuretted hydrogen., H2S( see Sulphur), and the radical Sulphydryl, SH. occurring in the Sulphydrates; ( 4) Hydrides of nitrogen, including Ammonia, Ammonium, and Amidogen; ( 5) Hydrides of phosphorus, including Phosphoretted h. ( phosphine), PHs( see Phosphous) and the radical Phosphonium, PH4; ( 6) Hydrides of antimony, comprising Antimoniuretted( or antimonetted) h. ( stibine), SbH3( see Antimonetted), and the radical stibonium, SbH4; ( 7) Hydrides of arsenic, including Arseniuretted hydrogen( see Arsine) and Arsonium( 8) Hydrides of carbon or the Hydrocarbons( see Hydrocarbon). H. goes into and out of combination with great facility, thus producing in the case of the organic compounds a great variety of substitution and addition compounds, and imparting to acids( of which h. forms the essential constituent) their peculiar property of forming salts by substitution of bases for h. H. test, a test for the presence of perforation of the intestine made by injecting h. into the rectum, when, if a rent be present, h. will pass out through it and appear externally, where its presence can be recognized by its inflammability.

A candle is not an elementary body, because we can get carbon out of it; we can get this hydrogen out of it, or at least out of the water which it supplies. – The Chemical History Of A Candle by Michael Faraday
-
Hydrogen, you know, comes from the candle, and oxygen, you believe, comes from the air. – The Chemical History Of A Candle by Michael Faraday
-
There is a special arrangement by which the " pilot"- the man who steers and operates the airship- can at any time measure the pressure of hydrogen in the balloon, thus knowing what he has to count on in the way of carrying power. – Kelly Miller's History of the World War for Human Rights by Kelly Miller
