What does the word hydrothorax mean?
-
-
A collection of watery fluid in the pleural cavity. ( Dorland, 27th ed)
-
is a rare disease, and difficult of diagnosis. It generally exists only on one side, which, if the fluid effused be considerable, projects more than the other. Dyspnoea, and fluctuation perceptible to the ear, are characteristic symptoms. When the chest is examined with the stethoscope, respiration is found to be wanting every where, except at the root of the lung. The sound is also dull on percussion. Effusion into the chest, as a result of inflammation of some thoracic viscus, is as common as the other is rare. It is usually a fatal symptom. It has been called symptomatic hydrothorax. In hydrothorax, the course of treatment proper in dropsies in general must be adopted. Diuretics seem, here, to be especially useful: probably on account of the great activity of pulmonary absorption. Paracentesis can rarely be serviceable.
-
An accumulation of serous liquid in the pleural cavity. It occurs in cardiac and other diseases causing venous obstruction, in states of debility when the flow of blood is feeble, and in hydraemia. Symptoms: dyspnoea with the physical signs of fluid( dullness or flatness on percussion, absent vocal fremitus, absent or bronchial voice and breathing). Treatment: causal; paracentesis.
