[ Latin] Specifically a chronic disease, also called T. dorsalis, T. dorsualis( i. e., T. of the back), locomotor ataxia, or posterior spinal sclerosis; characterized by increase of the interstitial tissue and atrophy of the nerve-substance( sclerosis) in the posterior columns of the cord and in the sensory nerve-trunks, and marked by lightning-like pains, abolition of the reflexes( Argyll-Robertson pupil), miosis, peculiar paroxysms of pain or functional disturbance affecting the stomach, larynx, or other viscera( crises; see Crisis), trophic affections, especially of the bones and joints, impairment or disturbances of sensibility, optic-nerve atrophy, impairment of sexual power, retention or incontinence of urine, and progressively increasing inco-ordination of movement. It is a disease if middle and advance life, especially frequent in males, and is often due to syphilis. The pains, optic atrophy, and abolition of the reflexes are usually the first symptoms, forming the pre-ataxic stage of disease. Course slow, usually progressive, but sometimes arrested spontaneously or by treatment; complete recovery is rare. Treatment: rest, avoidance of sexual and alcoholic excesses; arsenic, tonics( iron, quinine, nux vomica), nitrate of silver; morphine and cannabis indica for the pains; cocaine for the gastric and laryngeal paroxysm; catheterism in retention; systematic exercise for the inco-ordination. Spamodic t. ( T. dorsalis spamodica), spastic paraplegia due to primary lateral sclerosis.
