[ Latin] A solution of a non-volatile or only partially volatile medicinal substance in a menstruum other than water or glycerin; particularly in alcohol( Alcoholic t., Spirituous t., Tinctura alcoholica), ammoniated alcohol( Ammoniated t., Tinctura ammoniata), wine( Vinous t., Tinctura vinosa, Vinum, U. S.), or ether( Ethereal t., Tinctura aetherea). A very dilute alcoholic t. is sometimes called Hydro-alcoholic t., and one which contains a still smaller amount of alcohol, an Aqueous t. ( Tinctura aquosa, G. P.). When used without qualification, the term t. donates an alcoholic t. Cf. Spirit, Water, and Solution.
