-
-
[ Latin] A vessel carrying blood back from the tissues of the heart. A v. consists of an inner coat of flat endothelial cells tying upon a basis of connective tissue and elastic fibres; a middle coat containing white connective tissue, a little elastic tissue, and reticulum of transversely disposed muscular fibres; and an outer coat of white tissue, a little elastic tissue, and occasionally some longitudinal muscular fibres. The distinction between middle and outer coat is sometimes obscure. Many v’s, especially those of the limbs and the parietes of the body, have valves to prevent regurgitation of the blood( see Valve). The systemic v’s usually correspond to the arteries; in the case of the smaller vessels, a pair of v’s( venae comites) accompanying each artery. Specially-named v’s are the Basilic, Cephalic, Galen’s, Saphenous, etc. Emissary v’s, see Emissary.
